Service was great and the food delicious ! Highly recommend the bison burger and the chicken fried steak ! If you enjoy beer the moose drool is a must! Don't be fooled by it being a dark beer is creamy smooth and even comes in a 25oz size ! The booths all have a tv and there is a rooftop deck as well.

Randomly chose this place among the options on Main Street. This place is more of a bar that serves food rather than a restaurant. I had Rocky Mountain Oysters here (my first time!) and they were fine. My pulled pork sandwich (the Road Hogg) was good - no complaints. Overall, decent food, friendly service, and you get a TV at every booth.

5-star ambience; 3-star food. This place is cute and fun with very friendly staff. Be sure to pick up a t-shirt or two!!

The food was very okay as well as service. Nothing really stood out to us during this time of visit. They do have a nice patio - cover most of the sun so you don't get burn.

I would have given this place just three stars due to the food (it was sub-par) but I had such a great experience here. Our waitress was friendly and hilarious, definitely the best waitress I've ever had, and the cocktail and beer selections were wonderful. I would come back here.

Awesome food and excellent service. Just got off the 1880 train and wandered onto main street. Loved the name of the place and decided to grab lunch before wandering the streets. Greeted very promptly, seated in the window, "to watch the show in the street". The Lady had their special, double cheese burger and deemed it AWESOME...done perfect and seated to perfection. I had a South a Dakota delicacy, the Chislic basket...Allison tips, marinated and deep fried. Sweet LORD, I'd died and was in heaven. That and the buffalo chips and I saddled out to walk off the feast. They did an awesome job keeping up with the people dropping in and the biker lunch rush that was Friday in Hill City...most people asked for the roof and seemed to enjoy their experience.

Terrible service and food wasn't extravagant. The atmosphere was good but the waitress wasn't very uplifting and it took FOREVER to get our food, drinks, and ticket! Never going again.

This was our FAVORITE meal that we had while we were in South Dakota! A good selection of beers and cocktails and friendly servers? Great way to start our meal!!! We started with the state dish of Chislic...the flavor of the meat was fantastic, but the meat itself was a bit chewy. It's served with bbq sauce which is a great touch. My sister and I had the buffalo burger with jack cheese and jalapeno which was great! The meat was top notch. We also had the bbq pulled pork sandwich...messy meat with delicious flavors topped with cole slaw piled on a bun? WIN!!!! My mom had the chicken sandwich and seems to have enjoyed it. My dad had the Buffalo burger which he enjoyed as well. The fries were good too! This was one of our TOP MEALS in South Dakota and I wish it would have been closer to Keystone...we would have eaten there EVERYDAY during our visit :-)

Oh man. I LOVE food trucks, especially Mexican themed ones. Some quick tacos out of a truck....are my pure happiness. These tacos were amazing. I grabbed a few for my wife and a few for myself. While it wasn't quick it was good. i was a bit disappointing with the size, the flavor made up for it. I got the hottest sauce they had....and maybe my mistake....it wasn't white people hot, it was Mexican hot at the highest level. Still tasty, just hot. It only gets a 4 of 5 stars because the next day both my wife had I would have loved some cooling toilet paper. It was hot going in and hot going out.

Was a little apprehensive to go here based on previous reviews but we wanted to try some buffalo meat while we were in South Dakota. We ate on the patio on the roof which was beautiful. It was a little cramped up there and probably not the best place with a toddler. A few in our group ordered the buffalo brats. They were delicious. The fries were tasty as well. Our server was very friendly and patient with us.

Decent place to eat in Hill City. I had the ribs which were good, not fall off the bone though. My wife had the chicken sandwich which she said was good also. They have a good beer selection also. Wait staff was friendly but seemed to be running from one table to another.

Good food. My wife has the pulled pork sandwich and it was much better than my buffalo burger. It's a normal bar, but eating in the roof top patio was awesome.

We came here first several years ago and were not disappointed! We were slightly disappointed at how they changed the rooftop patio, but other than that it was another great experience. The inside is much a typical bar, you get your own TV at each booth which is very nice. Service was great, our waitress was friendly and knew what she was doing. My buffalo burger was surprisingly cooked better than almost anywhere else I have eaten. Not the slightest bit dry and had good flavor. Fries were amazing, I could eat an entire plate of them. Nachos were HUGE, just like our waitress told us but ordered them anyways. They were great. I will plan on eating here every time we are up in the Hills!
(5)Stephanie G.
GREAT BEER PRICES! Food was just ok- that whole town did not have any decent food selections unfortunately!
(3)John S.
Fun place! We sat on the rooftop bar in perfect weather. Our lunch was fresh ingredients and very tasty. Service was fantastic and friendly. Stop here for lunch or cocktails. I think evening would be even better here.
(5)James S.
Super waiter but a lousy lunch. We got their specialty and the sirloin tips were tough as shoe leather.
(3)Rebecca T.
I liked this place. Nice atmosphere, lots of fried options on the menu, and they put hats on the dead creatures mounted on the wall! I had some fried steak tips, I expected them to be breaded, they weren't buy still had a crisp exterior and a warm, soft meaty center. The fried pickle spears were nicely breaded though. There was a TV at te booth with a remote, so it was easy to catch the end of the movie we had started at the place with a TV in the booth earlier in the day!

Sorry folks but the 333 Main St address is a art and crafts / jewlrey place. We went with high hopes based on a locals review and ate instead at Desperado's.

We came into town just as a storm was getting underway so we ducked in here to grab a bite and avoid what turned out to be a torrential downpour. The menu was better than I expected for bar food and my pulled pork sandwich was pretty good. The house sangria wasn't my favorite, but for the price it was tough to complain about. All in all a forgettable, but not regrettable experience.

Great service, good food and beer. Had rocky mountain oysters. Great atmosphere. LOVE the Black Hills.

I was in Hill City on the 4th of July and read good reviews about the Bumpin Buffalo. I would have to say that any review about the food being good was completely wrong. I will start off with a compliment right now because all of the other things I will have to say will be negative. Our waitress was very nice and the atmosphere was ok. However, the food that we had was the worst overall dining experience I have ever had. I went there with my family and we ordered 6 different types of entrees. Every single dish was terrible (and this was after waiting over an hour for our food). The burger was burnt (my 14 year old brother who eats anything didn't even like it), the pulled pork and brats were dry and cold, the house specialty "cutlins" were a meager portion with no flavor or tenderness, the chicken florentine was straight from the freezer (and they forgot the dinner roll) . The best dish we had was the nachos, which were big but still served cold just like all of the other dishes we had. This was probably the worst overall food experience I had as no dish that we had wAs worth finishing. I consider myself one who appreciates good food but the truth is there was just nothing to appreciate at the Bumpin Buffalo in Hill City. I can only hope their second location in Lead does not follow the same road map as this Bumpin Buffalo. If you are looking for good food, stay away!

This has to be the worst place that I've eaten in in years! We went here because a friend that we are traveling with had eaten lunch here a few years ago and loved it. Well, we walked in the door and the host said that there was a wait downstairs and we could eat on the patio upstairs. We went up there and sat down. eventually a server came by and dropped off a few menus and took our order. To make a long story short. we were served on styrofoam with plastic knives and forks; the special, ordered rare came well done and couldn't be replaced because there was "no more" left. A hamburger ordered with swiss and mushrooms to replace it came with neither and when we told the server, she came back in a few minutes with a cold slice of American cheese and sliced jalapenos! We were told by the manager when we complained, that the patio had a totally different menu and kitchen than the downstairs. Needless to say, we won't return!!

Eh. one of the few places open for food between 3 and 5. We ate on rooftop patio, definitely not as nice as inside. The waitress was friendly enough, However all of our items were wrong. We had asked for a few changes from the menu, type of cheese, hold the onions, etc. None of them happened. Food wasn't good or bad. You can hear the nearby train while you eat

Walked in for a burger and beer. The woman behind the bar said she had been there for years. She was such a warm and attentive lady. Had the bison burger and my husband had the largest burger they make. The burgers where really good but not the best I've ever had. For the price and the area the food was great, hot, and served quickly. I suppose it was because no one was really there... Overall a neat place to eat....

We popped in for late lunch and were pleasantly surprised. Not an extensive menu but good fare. Yummy, yummy onion rings. Loved the chicken & dumpling soup; it was very tasty with light dumplings. I would definitely go there again.

We were prety disappointed in the food at Bumpin Buffalo. It's not so much a nice restaurant, as a glorified bar--expect mediocre bar food, and you'll be fine.

I ate here when the restaurant first opened a few years ago, and will not waste my time going back. The place used to be a grand old dive of epic proportions, with old men in overalls sitting at a bar drinking beer, an interesting place that dated back to when Hill City first was a town in the 1870's. The bar was full of relics and antiques (including its patrons) and was owned by the city since its inception. Then around 2004, it disappeared, and so did the old tables and booths, old painting, old flooring, and everything else that made it a unique old dump full of history. The food is average (deep fried pub-grub, and not exceptional nor unique) and the atmosphere just isn't there. There's so much more to offer, dining-wise, in Hill City, ESPECIALLY if history is interesting to you and you like quaint over trendy. The Alpine Inn, for example, has kept all its history and is legendary for their lunch and dinners. The J-9 Cafe (I think that's still its name) is on Main Street where it's been for decades serving homemade, greasy, but wonderful food and daily specials. I'd recommend those places first.

Ate here passing through town after a visit to Rushmore. The roof top dining drew us in. Standard bar menu, burgers, etc. I had a fantastic grilled chicken sandwich, but my husband said his pre-made burger was average. Sweet potato fries were great and my husband's regular fries were good too. Food was served pretty fast. Overall, not bad, but kind of standard.

There on vacation. Hill City is centrally located and the Bumpin Buffalo is right on the main drag.. Great service, very cool ambiance Had the bison burger and others had the bison bratwurst and a BLT. Food was above averag to very goode. The staff and the bartender (owner?) were great. They obviously care about what they do. Has an upstairs deck as well
(4)Dave S.
Good place for a beer or cocktail.Good Tap selection is a plus.

As a bar I'd give it 5 stars but not as a restaurant. Food was mediocre. Buffalo burger was the best of the lot. Marinated steak bites are nice as an app, but as a meal, they get old fast. Nice craft brewed house label beer. Nice atmosphere Oddly, each booth has a TV so if you don't like to talk or you want to watch a game, thats a plus. Service was odd. They were dead, but one of the servers was somehow in the weeds so another lady took over our table. She was pleasant if a bit inattentive. Again, only 3 or 4 tables full at this time and there were 3 servers so odd. Not a lot of dining options in town, but I'd go down the street to the diner.

In a city littered with "closed for the season" signs in early-October, the open sign on their door was a very welcoming sign. I'm not sure why they essentially close everything down from October-May, given that there is absolutely nothing to do in this area. The food here is amazingly good. Their buffalo wings just might be the best ones we've ever had. We've scoured many places around the country for the best buffalo wings, and I would put these in my top 3. The buffalo burger was awesome and the corn nuggets really good. Don't come here expecting healthy food. You're in South Dakota for crying out loud, where it's snowing in early October. You need some fat on your bones or you'll die from this ridiculously cold weather. Will we be back? Definitely not. But not because the food wasn't good. We just hope to never, ever find ourselves in South Dakota again. Ever.

I would not recommend this place at all. We only went here because the Alpine Inn down the block had a long wait. Bad choice. The Bumpin' Buffalo had horrible low quality food. The waitress was rude; when asked for a recommendation she flatly said she was a vegetarian and offered no suggestions. The food we ordered was undercooked and we didn't eat more than a few bites. She never came by to ask how the food was until she dropped off the bill, and even that sat on the table for 20 minutes. We should've stuck it out and waited for the Alpine Inn.

This night out started with a 45 minute wait for 2 burgers and a grilled chicken sandwich. DO NOT ORDER THE 1/3 # ??? Burger. It is paper thin and cooked so long it crumbled when I tried to pick it up to put ketchup on the bun. Worse burger I have EVER had. The grilled chicken was sooooo dry it was hard to eat any of it. The server avoided our table and only dropped our bill off after serving us the slop they called food. Not wanting to make a scene I wrote a note on the back of the charge slip with my name and phone number hoping the manager or owner would call me to talk about our experience. At 11:00 a.m. the next morning I called the owner to explain our evening at her restaurant. She said she would look at the note and see who our server was. At no point was any effort made to correct the issues with our meal. My name is Jim Tipton and anyone thinking of eating feel free to call me @ 605-521-4049.

we just had beer, but the porter was very good, and was nice location on main st. with roof top patio. we ordered from roof bar and they seemed freindly

We went here for dinner on a cross country road trip... They do nice appetizers and the burgers were pretty good. The buffalo burger was a little over done though...
(3)Jennifer B.
Right in downtown Hill City, this is a nice little bar with a good selection of beers on tap but with a very small menu, on which everything is fried. Don't get me wrong, I ate my fried food, but there really were no healthy options. Probably a better place to go drink at than eat.
